Dear Distant Friend,
While I dream my nights away,
for you it's another challenging day
of physical labour- a test of skill,
for fellows it may involve a kill.
I try to imagine what it might be like
sitting and waiting for the enemy to strike,
muscles tense; anticipation making my mind crazed,
a dangerous, twisting, winding maze.
You have taken on a job feared by others
despite warnings from a worrisome lover.
You may have a family who miss you so,
lovely people I may never know.
Brave enough to sacrifice all,
you are the tallest of the tall
and when you're feeling all alone-
just remember those who think of you back home.
You deserve to be honoured for your valiant works
but a growing fear of mine still lurks-
that you don't receive enough letters when you're away
which is I am mailing this letter today.
Love, perfect health, and good wishes,
An Anonymous Guardian
